The development of a new product has several distinct phases. To work best these phases need to interact with each other during the development cycle. The first key phase is Product specification, this is were the key requirements of a product are agreed. The must haves for the product need specifying, as well as the nice to have features. An indication of volume and build price should also be given. Then the circuit will be designed and captured, this phase can sometimes require changes to the specification. During the circuit capture phase any Programmable Logic design for custom parts should be considered as this will impact on the final design. The next phase is PCB layout, this will sometimes affect the captured circuit were it makes sense to swap gates on devices, or logic device pin-outs for better circuit routing. Software design for any Microcontroller firmware also needs considering during the capture phase as this again can effect the circuit design. Product Test is an important part of the development of a product, we need to ensure the product can be tested efficiently and to a satisfactory level, sometimes there is a need to add extra circuitry to simplify the testing of a product. We then need to built prototypes, ensure they performs as desired, and take the product into production. |
